Appeal Patron Mr George Roberts

As patron of the St James Conversation Appeal, I would like to offer my support in raising the funds to restore this precious North Queensland landmark.George Roberts photo.jpg

In 1887 an audacious group of pioneers decided to build a Cathedral when Townsville was home to only 4,000 residents and this, despite the doubters, proved to be an outstanding achievement.   The Cathedral has since served the community as a grand place of worship under the guidance of Diocesan Bishops throughout the past 121 years.

It has endured harsh conditions in its time but continues to welcome parishioners from all parts of Australia.

The Diocese family, myself included, are committed to rebuilding the Cathedral to return it to a safe and suitable standard so it can remain as the centre of Anglican worship in North Queensland for generations to come.

We have a responsibility and obligation to ensure the building’s glory is preserved and it would be a great loss to see such a valuable landmark deteriorate now after its vigorous life span.

I feel privileged to be part of this chapter in the Cathedral’s history and I know with the support of North Queenslanders we will succeed in conserving its glory. I urge all people who are proud of North Queensland and our heritage to stand alongside the Diocese and restore St James Cathedral.
